Pre-Order Numbers For Destiny 2: The Final Shape Are Apparently Less Than A Quarter Of Lightfall’s Pre-Orders

Destiny 2 has had a pretty rough year. The Lightfall expansion was a commercial success but a critical flop and was received even worse by fans. A stark contrast to the flawed but brilliant year of Witch Queen, which was the highest point the game was at since the Forsaken expansion back in 2018. 2023 proved to be pretty lousy for Bungie, and the ongoing player retention issues due to Lightfall led to the studio laying off roughly 100 people.

General interest in Destiny 2 has gone down severely since the aftermath of Lightfall. People felt lied to by the studio and a decidedly average year of content didn’t help. It seems that lowered sentiment is potentially hitting Bungie where it hurts, as pre-orders for the game’s story-ending expansion, The Final Shape, are apparently at an all-time low.

Reported by The Game Post, data was received through the Charlemagne Discord bot which makes use of the Destiny API. The Discord bot scanned through all registered unique Destiny profiles to look for the pre-order emblem that is granted when pre-ordering The Final Shape. There is a caveat, this does not include emblems that have not been redeemed/collected or players whose profiles are set to private (around 0.15%) of the total player base, so it’s not wholly accurate but it does paint a basic picture. Destiny 2’s expansion pre-order numbers are as follows:

  • Beyond Light – 3,189,075
  • Witch Queen – 2,244,640
  • Lightfall – 2,249,679
  • The Final Shape – 407,601

This is potentially damning information to see, especially since Bungie would be banking a lot on this expansion considering it will close out a story arc that has been ongoing since the release of the first game back in 2014.

The Final Shape is the sixth expansion for Destiny 2 and is set to release for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
