Another day, another set of layoffs in the game industry. This time, however, the news is coming from gaming giant, Sony. Originally reported by Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, it was announced this morning that Sony Group Corp. would be laying off 900 people across various regions with the company’s video-game division being the only one affected. The news was both made public and broken to employees via a note to staff from departing President and CEO, Jim Ryan.
“After careful consideration and many leadership discussions over several months, it has become clear changes need to be made to continue to grow the business and develop the company” – Jim Ryan via note to staff
Several PlayStation studios are to be affected by these layoffs, with the most notable studios including:
- Insomniac – Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank
- Naughty Dog – The Last of Us
- Guerrilla Games – Horizon
On top of these teams being hit with layoffs, it was also reported that PlayStation London, the studio behind the SingStar series, and various virtual reality studios would be shut down as well as the news that a new Twisted Metal game was cancelled. The studio behind that project, Firesprite, will also be affected by these layoffs.
