The rumour mill has been working pretty hard lately regarding the successor to the Nintendo Switch. However, nothing has ever really come to fruition. Thankfully, it seems that the wait doesn’t have to go on for too much longer as Shuntaro Furukawa has announced that the announcement will come relatively soon.
This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct…

As stated in the tweet above, the Nintendo Switch was first revealed over nine years ago in March 2015, with its release following two years later paired with the immensely successful The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as its biggets launch title. The Nintendo Switch went on to be the second-most successful console in Nintendo’s history, with the console’s sales surpassing the staggering milestone of 140 million unit sold.
Furukawa also mentions that the platform holder will be hosting a Nintendo Direct in the latter half of June, but temper expectations by explaining that the Nintendo Switch successor would not be making an appearance.
The Japanese Fiscal Year starts on April 1 and ends on March 31 the following year, so according to Furukawa we should expect an announcement sometime within the next nine months or so following the June 2024 Nintendo Direct.
