2023 was a pretty rough year for the game industry. A year of great game releases was overshadowed by the news that many developers and publishers were experiencing layoffs while publishers and executives boasted record profits and refused to pocket slightly fewer millions of dollars. A few of the notable names on the list include Epic Games and Bungie, the latter of whom was allegedly given US$1.2 billion to ensure staff retention.
Supermassive Games, a studio whose works include Until Dawn and The Quarry, is the latest studio to be hit by layoffs. The news was broken on the studio’s Twitter, stating “It’s no secret that the game industry is currently facing challenges, and unfortunately we aren’t immune to this.”

Prior to this, the game industry had already suffered over 6400 layoffs this year and that number will undoubtedly continue to rise.
