No Man’s Sky’s New Update Brings Back The Feeling Of Isolation In Space

Hello Games has pushed out a new major update for No Man’s Sky titled “Adrift” overnight and it is poised to take the game in a different direction from what it has been going in recently. If you remember from the launch period days back in 2016, the game (accidentally) portrayed an excellent feeling of being alone. That’s what No Man’s Sky: Adrift wants to bring back but in a much more focused and intentional manner.

Adrift takes placed in an alternate universe, where the feeling of isolation is ever-present. There are no lifeforms to trade with, learn from, or engage with in any capacity. It’s wholly different compared to the current No Man’s Sky survival experience.

“A lot has changed in the years since No Man’s Sky released. There’s so much we love about the game now, but there was something unique at release in how alone you felt in the universe. Going further back I have great memories of early unreleased versions of No Man’s Sky where there were no NPCs, no shops, no help… just you the player as a tiny dot lost in the infinite.” – Hello Games via Blog Post

You will be in far more danger in this alternate universe too. Sandworms roam free, fiend eggs will be spreading across planets, with no buildings remaining in a usable state. Players will at least have some kind of shelter and safety in the Iron Vulture, a bulky Hauler ship whose shape and design reminds me of Star Citizen’s Drake Cutter.  Additionally, there is a ghostly frigate that the player will be able to engage with, making the player feel just a little less lonely.

There are a bunch of other additions including:

  • Starship Wreckage Base Parts
  • Gnawing Scuttler Companion
  • Stealth Paint
